Devils defeat Tigers, 12-1

The Mathews High School varsity baseball team improved to 1-1 in district play with a 12-1 victory on April 16 over the King and Queen Tigers. In their only game of the week, the Blue Devils won in five innings in a game shortened by the slaughter rule.

The Devils, after a quiet first inning by both clubs, struck first by tallying seven runs in the top of the second. Three more runs in the third and two more in the fourth supplied the Devils with a large enough lead, 11, to complete the slaughter. RBIs were scattered across the box score for the Devils, being awarded to Deondre Foster (three), Josh Wilson (one), Darian Beale (two), Logan Byrns (two) and Zach Jarosz (one). Foster, Paul Burnette and Will Harrington each contributed to the offense with two hits on the day, while Wilson, Beale, Byrns, Jarosz and Taiwan Forrest picked up one apiece.
