“Choose fruits and vegetables.”
As your spring gardens begin to ripen, consider developing healthful eating habits now that fresh fruits and vegetables are more readily available.
Director of System Clinical Nutrition, Quality and Compliance at Riverside Health System Alison Manger-Weikel said people should incorporate more fruits and vegetables in their lives, at least five servings. One easy way to do this is by incorporating fruit with breakfast every morning.
“Most people associate fruit with breakfast,” she said.
On the flip side, people should include a “much smaller portion of the meat,” said Manger-Weikel.
A lot of people look to meat for their source of protein, but “most people don’t need 60-80 grams of protein a day,” according to Manger-Weikel. The exception is for people who are very physically active.
Brown rice, spices, olive oils, asparagus, peas and green beans are all great items to include in a healthy diet, she said.
