Deltas roll past Tides, Mets, now sport a 3-1 record

Offense was not in short supply for the Deltaville Deltas last weekend, as they twice put up double-digit runs to roll past the Tappahannock Tides and Richmond Mets by the scores of 16-3 and 22-3, respectively.

The wins push Deltaville to 3-1 overall and 3-0 in league play, currently sitting a half game back of the Richmond Smokies in a tie for second place with Richmond Team Woody in the National Adult Baseball Association Richmond league.

The Deltas return home this Saturday night for a 7:30 game, which will bring the Mets for a return trip to Deltaville. On Sunday, the Deltas will hit the road for a game against Tappahannock.

Deltas’ catcher Ryan Pastirik tags a runner at the plate in Saturday night’s win.

Deltas 16, Tides 3

As the booms of fireworks thundered from every direction surrounding the ballpark on July 4, the Deltas batters added plenty of thunderous cracks of their own to the nighttime chorus.

Chris Blake blasted a third-inning grand slam, driving in four of his seven RBIs on the night, and the Deltas racked up 16 hits as they overcame an early Tappahannock lead on Saturday night.

Tappahannock got the action started right off the bat, plating a run in the top of the first inning to take the early lead. Deltaville responded to tie in the bottom half, with Tyler West doubling and then stealing home on a wild pitch to even the score.

The Tides took the lead again in the second, blasting a two-run home run over the right field wall. Again, Deltaville responded in the bottom half, when Blake drove in Ryan Pastirik to cut the Tides lead to 3-2.

After holding the Tides in the third, Deltaville kicked its offense into high gear. The Deltas tied the game, 3-3, and loaded the bases for Blake, who blasted a line drive over the right center-field wall to break the game open. Three batters later, Tyler West skied a moonshot two-run home run over the center-field wall to extend the Deltas lead to 9-3.

Chris Blake had three hits, including a grand slam home run and seven RBIs on Saturday night.

Deltaville plated another run in the fifth, before going on another seven-hit, six-run tear in the sixth to put the game completely out of reach.

Nicky Wohleking was the winning pitcher for the Deltas, striking out seven over five innings, while allowing three runs (two earned). Cole Stamm cleaned up the final innings, striking out four while giving up just one hit.

Blake’s three-hit night contributed a total of eight of Deltaville’s runs.

Deltas 22, Mets 3

The hot bats continued on Monday night in Richmond, as Deltaville scored early and often to roll past the Richmond

Mets, 22-3.

Deltaville took advantage of a pair of Mets defensive errors in the top of the first inning, and used three hits and a pair of walks to plate six runs in the opening frame.

The Mets responded with a two-run home run in the bottom of the inning, but the Deltas continued to control the game for the rest of the night. Deltaville scored again in the second, and plated three more runs in the fourth to extend the lead to 10-2, and then exploded for 11 runs in the fifth inning. The Mets scored on an error in the seventh, but that was the only damage their offense would muster for the rest of the night.

Jay Moore was the winning pitcher, allowing just the two first-inning runs, while going on to scatter five hits and striking out four. Justin Hale pitched two innings of hitless relief, striking out three, and Spencer Crittenden struck out two in the final inning.

Ryan Wiggins, Devin Sisson, and Jacob Houston led the offense with three hits apiece, with Houston driving in five runs and scoring twice more.
