Deltas’ offense booms in weekend series sweep

The Deltaville Deltas hit six home runs last weekend, powering their way to a pair of league victories over the Richmond Trash Pandas and the Dinwiddie Brewjays.

With the wins, Deltaville moves to sole possession of second place, with a 6-1 record in league play, and a 7-1 overall record.

The harshest part of the Deltas schedule starts tonight, Thursday, July 3, as the Deltas play six games in 11 days. The stretch starts on tonight with the continuation of a road game against the Tappahannock Tides at Essex High School. The game was previously begun in June, but was postponed in the fourth inning due to storms with the score tied, 0-0.

On Saturday, the Deltas welcome back the Chesapeake Sharks for their annual Independence Day Weekend matchup. First pitch will be at 6 p.m., with postgame fireworks starting after the game, roughly at 9:15 o’clock.

On Tuesday, the Deltas will play an away game against the Richmond Dirt Devils.

Deltas 7, Brewjays 3

Travis Crump and Alexander Crittenden hit back-to-back home runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to break a 3-3 tie, leading the Deltas to a 7-3 victory on Friday night against the Dinwiddie Brewjays.

Deltaville struck first in the closely contested game, plating three runs in the third inning thanks to RBIs from Kevin Cole, Jacob Houston, and Spencer Crittenden. However, the Brewjays scraped back for a run in the fourth, and in the fifth inning used a pair of doubles to tie the game, 3-3.

The tie score held into the bottom of the eighth thanks to the pitching of Matt Kleinfelter and Cole Stamm. The two combined for 19 strikeouts over eight innings.

It looked as if the game was going to go into the ninth inning scoreless, as the Deltas made two quick outs to start the bottom of the eighth. However, Scott Crump drove a single to left field to start the two-out rally, and after Creston Saunders drew a walk, T. Crump blasted the first pitch he saw over the right field wall for a 3-run home run. A. Crittenden followed with another blast to right, extending the lead to 7-3. Relief pitcher Dylan Amend took the mound for the Deltas in the ninth and pitched a scoreless inning to seal the game.

Deltas 9, Trash Pandas 5

Five home runs flew out of Deltaville Ballpark on Saturday night—three of them by Deltas newcomer Jett Bristow—as the Deltas defeated the Richmond Trash Pandas, 9-5.

The Pandas scored first, taking a 2-0 lead in the top of the second inning. However, Bristow halved that lead in the bottom of the inning, launching a solo home run deep to center field to make the score 2-1.

In the third, Richmond’s Dawson Hock sent another pitch flying out of the ballpark to extend the Trash Panda lead to 3-1.

However, the game turned in Deltaville’s favor in the bottom of the third. A hit and a pair of walks loaded the bases for the Deltas, which led to a Trash Panda pitching change. Deltas catcher Colton Smith welcomed the new pitcher to the game by driving a grand-slam home run into the trees in left field to give the Deltas a 5-3 lead. The reliever’s next pitch didn’t fare any better—Bristow followed Smith by blasting the first pitch he saw deep into the night sky over center field for his second home run of the game.

The Trash Pandas would not go quietly, however. A trio of hits in the fourth pulled the visitors within a run, and the game went to the fifth inning with the Deltas leading, 6-5.

From there, Deltas pitcher Eli Pittman bore down. In what would become the longest outing of his Deltas career, Pittman allowed just one hit over the next four innings.

Meanwhile, the Deltas extended their lead with a run in the sixth thanks to Creston Saunders drawing a walk, then stealing second and third bases before stealing home on a wild pitch. In the seventh, Bristow struck again, driving his third home run of the night—this one a two-run shot to right field.

Pittman was the winning pitcher, tossing 6-2/3 innings. Bristow pitched the first 1-1/3 innings, and Austin Shackleford closed the game with a scoreless ninth.

Bristow’s three-home run game paced the Deltas offense, with S. Crittenden also contributing a three-hit game. Smith’s grand slam was one of his two hits on the night; he was joined by T. Crump, A. Crittenden, and S. Crump, each of whom had two-hit nights at the plate.
