The Daily Grind, a coffee house, is slated to open at Cattails gift shop’s former location in Mathews sometime after the first of the year.

A project of Dr. Ben Lennon, who owns several buildings in the shopping center that formerly housed Best Value Supermarket, the shop is currently being overseen by Casey Shaw, an employee in Lennon’s dental practice. She said she has hired a manager for the business but still has openings for baristas.

Shaw said she broached the idea of a coffee shop to Dr. Lennon when Cattail’s announced it would be moving. His family members and employees all liked the idea, she said, “So he let me go with the vision I had.”

A large part of that vision, said Shaw, is to be youth-friendly, so the county’s young people can have a place to gather after school.
