In a draft budget presented to school board members Tuesday night, Mathews County Public Schools will seek an additional $339,694, or 5.21 percent, in county funds for the 2011-2012 fiscal year, over current appropriations.

Much of that money is being sought to offset state cuts proposed in Gov. Bob McDonnell’s budget, according to Superintendent of Schools David J. Holleran. Holleran’s operational budget for 2011-2012 shows an increase in expenditures of $47,045.

That figure roughly mirrors the $50,000 the superintendent was directed by school board members to include in the budget for technology.

This fiscal year, Mathews taxpayers contributed $6.515 million to the school system. Holleran’s proposal calls for that number to increase to $6.855 million. The school system’s operating budget would remain at roughly $12.2 million.
