County contributes $200,000 for library renovations

The Mathews County Board of Supervisors approved a $200,000 capital contribution during its meeting Tuesday night to help pay for renovations to Mathews Memorial Library.

This makes the third significant commitment to the project, according to a press release from Mary Ellen Stumpf, whose firm Stumpf & Associates has been contracted to raise funds for the project.

Previously, an anonymous Mathews County resident donated $200,000 to purchase the Radio Shack building, and more recently, Washington D.C. resident Brent Nunnelley Goo, who has ties to the county and has toured the space, committed a $150,000 gift.

Stumpf said the addition will provide dedicated space for a teen center and more space for public reading areas, community meetings, storage and staff support. It will also relieve over-crowded areas in the main library, especially in the archives and the children’s areas.
