Congressional races, meals tax on Tuesday’s ballot

In less than a week, Gloucester and Mathews voters will head to the polls to elect two members of the region’s Congressional delegation. Mathews voters will be asked whether they support the creation of a meals tax (see related story).

An amendment to the state’s constitution concerning exempting widows and widowers of soldiers killed in action from real estate taxes will also be considered.

On Tuesday’s ballot, incumbent U.S. Sen. Mark Warner, a Democrat, and 1st District Rep. Rob Wittman, a Republican, will be defending their seats against challenges from the opposing party, as well as third-party candidates.

Normal polling locations will be open from 6 a.m.-7 p.m. on Election Day in both Gloucester and Mathews.

Registrars in both counties are encouraging all registered voters to remember to bring at least one acceptable form of photo identification, which is now required in order to vote. Acceptable forms of identification include a valid Virginia driver’...
