The first mention of coffee in America was by Captain John Smith who had seen coffee cultivation in Turkey and introduced the idea to Jamestown colonists. By the mid-1600s coffee was brought to New York (then known as New Amsterdam) by the British. Coffee houses rapidly began to appear but tea continued to be the favored drink in the New World.
