A Cobbs Creek man is awaiting sentencing after being convicted on a charge of manufacturing marijuana in his home on Buckley Hall Road.

Appearing in federal court on Sept. 30, Kenneth M. Putt, 48, pleaded guilty to and was found guilty of one count of knowingly, intentionally, and unlawfully manufacturing more than 100 marijuana plants.

U.S. District Judge Raymond A. Jackson handed down the verdict at a hearing on a motion to suppress evidence held in the Newport News Division of the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Virginia. A jury trial had been scheduled for Oct. 2.

The marijuana manufacturing operation was discovered in April when the Mathews Volunteer Fire Department responded to a report of a structure fire at Putt’s home on Buckley Hall Road. Firefighters found 352 marijuana plants growing hydroponically in upstairs rooms, along with two pounds of marijuana, according to a report at that time from the Mathews County Sheriff’s Office.
