Coast Guard rescues stranded woman, three grandchildren

Coast Guardsmen from U.S. Coast Guard Station Milford Haven rescued a woman and her three grandchildren after they were stranded in Milford Haven Sunday afternoon.

The woman, who is in her 50s, had taken her grandchildren, ages 6, 8, and 9, for a ride and was allowing one of them to drive the personal watercraft when the child hit the gas too hard and ejected the woman from the vessel, said Petty Officer Kendall Story. The woman fell off with the kill switch in her hand and the children couldn’t restart the craft, he said. As it drifted toward the shore, the woman was left behind. She grew tired as she treaded water.

Story said that the water was rough and a small craft advisory had been issued. The children were wearing life jackets, he said, but the woman had removed hers because it was impeding her efforts to swim.

The woman and the children were taken to the shore, where a Mathews Volunteer Rescue Squad crew evaluated them and found no injuries, said Story. The Coast Guard...
