Civil War book donated to Gloucester Library

The Gloucester Historical Society and Gloucester Museum of History have donated two copies of the book, “One Day at a Time: History of Gloucester County During the War Between the States, 1861-1865” by the late Benjamin H. Harris Jr. to Gloucester County Public Library’s Virginia Room at its Main Street Center location. The historical society and museum jointly published the book last year. According to Historic Resources Supervisor Robert Kelly of the Gloucester Museum, Harris spent most of his life working on the book and passed away in 2024 before it could be edited or published. “He had a hard copy and a digital copy,” said William “Bill” Lawrence, treasurer of the Gloucester Historical Society and the Gloucester Genealogical Society and board member of the Gloucester Museum Foundation. “I started editing it and I realized I needed a lot of help.” Museum volunteer Trina Dugan spent nearly eight months editing the book, reading it over multiple times. “Obviously a lot of work went i...
