Citation cobia caught in local waters

Big cobia, have arrived in local waters.

Andrew and Mekayla Crouse of Gloucester both caught and released citation cobias in the York River Channel, as noted in the June 3 issue of vasaltwaterjournal.com.

Andrew Crouse received citations for two fish caught on May 31, one measuring 53 inches, and one measuring 51 inches. His wife Mekayla boated and released a 50-inch cobia for a citation.

In addition, Donald Marshall of Hayes has received a citation for catching and releasing a 29-inch flounder on May 29 at York Spit Light.

Seasons change

Cobia must be released until the catch season begins this Monday, June 15. Limits include: 43 inch minimum; only one fish over 50 inches aboard the vessel; possession limit of one person or two per vessel, whichever is more restrictive. Cobia season continues through Sept. 15.

The Chesapeake Bay, spring rockfish season, which opened May 15, closes on Monday, June 15.

The speckled trout fishery remains closed through June 30.

As of June 1, through Dec. 31, flounder must be at least 17.5 inches to keep, up from 16 inches during the first five months of the year.
