Christopher Hutson, 57, is running for reelection as a Republican for the Gloucester Board of Supervisors Gloucester Point District in the upcoming November elections. He is unopposed in his reelection bid.
Hutson has served three terms on the Gloucester Board of Supervisors and is currently the board’s chairman for the second time.
Hutson said he is running to see projects like the Gloucester High School renovation through to completion. He said he also wants to see the board address more of Gloucester’s unfunded capital improvement needs to continue making the county more attractive for businesses and young families.
Hutson said projects like the renovations to Woodville Park would be a long-term benefit for the county. He said Gloucester needs to have more activities for the youth, which in turn will bring in more young families. He said by bringing in more business, whether it’s someone starting a business out of their garage or attracting small industry Gloucester would bring more jobs to the county to support young adults looking to start their careers.
Over his last term on the board, Hutson said he’s proud of the work he’s had a hand in accomplishing, including the construction of the county’s new bus facility and implementation of the one cent sales tax to fund school debt associated with new construction and major renovations.
Supporting education is one of the most important items on Hutson’s agenda, he said. He first moved to Gloucester when he was in middle school and was brought up through the Gloucester school system. He and his wife, Hope, have had three children who all went through the Gloucester school system. Hope Hutson is also a teacher at Botetourt Elementary School. When he and his family returned to Gloucester after some time away, he said the school system was a big draw. He said supporting the schools supports the county and its growth.
Being on the Gloucester Board of Supervisors is his opportunity to serve his community, said Hutson. He said serving at the county level gives him the benefit of seeing the results of his choices firsthand.
A graduate of Hampden-Sydney University, Hutson earned an MBA at Virginia Commonwealth University. He is the owner of a small trucking company and said his experience as a small business owner gives him a unique perspective as a board member, he said. He said it influences how he approaches the county budget so he can best help the county reach its long-term goals.
