Chase begins in White Marsh, ends in Hampton

A fugitive was arrested Sunday night in Hampton after leading law enforcement on a pursuit that began in Gloucester.

At approximately 8:40 p.m. Sunday, the Gloucester Sheriff’s Office initiated a traffic stop on Route 17 in the White Marsh area. GSO Capt. J.L. Sharp said the driver of the stopped vehicle was identified as 28-year-old Troix Craig Watkins of Waterview Drive in Newport News. Watkins initially stopped his vehicle and was made aware that he was considered a fugitive from Texas.

As deputies attempted to arrest Watkins on the outstanding Texas warrant, Sharp said Watkins restarted his vehicle and fled as deputies tried to remove him from the seat. Deputies engaged in a southbound pursuit and deployed spike strips in an effort to safely terminate Watkins’ ability to flee. Sharp said the spikes were able to puncture one tire.

The pursuit proceeded through York County, onto Interstate 64 and into Hampton where Watkins’ vehicle ultimately came to a stop. Sharp said Watkins surrendered peacefully and was taken into custody without incident.

Deputies then discovered a loaded handgun inside the vehicle, Sharp said. Warrants were obtained and executed on Watkins for DUI, third or subsequent offense; eluding; possession of a firearm by a convicted felon; and refusal to provide a sample of breath or blood. Sharp said no injuries were reported as a result of the pursuit, which was assisted by the York County Sheriff’s Office, the Virginia State Police and the Hampton Police Division.
