Celebration Saturday to mark 249th anniversary of Battle of Cricket Hill

On Saturday, the Richard Henry Lee Chapter, Virginia Society, Sons of the American Revolution, will celebrate the 249th anniversary of the Battle of Cricket Hill/Gwynn’s Island with a ceremony in front of the earthworks of the American Patriot battle site at Morningstar Marinas, 249 Mill Point Road, Hudgins.
The celebration begins at 10 a.m. and the public is welcome to attend.
SAR will muster a color guard dressed in colonial attire of Continental soldiers and militia. There will be a musket fire component. The keynote speaker will be SAR compatriot Dr. Patrick Hannum of the Norfolk Chapter, Virginia Society SAR.
The Battle of Cricket Hill/Gwynn’s Island actually took place on July 9, 1776. American patriots under the command of General Andrew Lewis bombarded the British ships at anchor on Gwynn’s Island where John Murray, the Earl of Dunmore, the last Royal Governor of Virginia had landed and set up camp after being deposed in Norfolk.
