The Fairfield Foundation had a day of activities on Friday to commemorate the first known countywide celebration of Independence Day in Gloucester, held on July 6, 1858. That first celebration included a parade in which descendants of men who fought in the Revolutionary War and the War of 1812 marched from Hickory Fork to the Leavett residence on Carter’s Creek, where a banquet was held. On Friday, Fairfield Foundation staff, volunteers and guests recreated the parade, marching around the structure built over the foundation. Leading the parade, from left, were Lori Jackson Black, donor relations officer and project manager; Tom Karow, foundation president; Rachel Alwine, outreach coordinator, and Van Button, volunteer.
