Machicomoco State Park, Hayes, has a busy schedule of events planned this month.
At 10 o’clock this morning, there will be a guided sculpting program “Design at Dawn Blooms of Clay” at Picnic Area 1 where participants will be able to sculpt their own flower. A second Design at Dawn program (“Drawing Machicomoco) will be held at 10 a.m. on May 30.
Design at Dusk programs will be held at 7:45 p.m. on Saturday, May 14 (“Wildlife Wired”) and at 7:30 p.m. on May 27 (“Paint the Park”). Pre-registration and a $10 fee are required to participate in both the Design at Dawn and Design at Dusk events.
At 4 o’clock today near the Timberneck House, guests can take part in “Expedition Environment, Soil Sleuth,” an educational mystery activity. A second Expedition Environment program (“Conservation Exploration”) will be held at 4 p.m. on Saturday, May 29. Pre-registration and a $5 fee are required to participate in these programs.
On Friday, May 13, at 8 p.m., park guests can sign up for an outdoor class to participate in the burning and scaping of a log canoe, along with s’mores. Pre-registration is required along with a $5 fee.
On Saturday, May 14, at 10 a.m. at Picnic Shelter 2, park guests can take part in a bird hike to learn the basics of birding. At 4 o’clock that day, guests can earn a patch by participating in a mock dig for artifacts Junior Ranger program at the Demonstration Circle in the Interpretive Area. There are a number of other Junior Ranger programs planned this month, including mock dig for artifacts on May 21 at 3 p.m. and 4 p.m. on May 27; and one on tree ID skills at 5 p.m. on May 21. There is no additional fee.
On Saturday, May 21, at 10 a.m., park goers can learn how to identify the tracks of Machicomoco and cast their own tracks. The event will be at the Demonstration Circle.
On Saturday, May 28, at 10 a.m., park goers can discover the pollinators of the park by going to the Interpretive Area to learn about and attempt to find our pollinator pals.
Also on Saturday, May 28, at 4 p.m., guests can immerse themselves in the Tales of Machicomoco with face painting, costume making, and acting by participating in this park theater program which will meet off the Trailhead parking lot. Pre-registration is required to participate in this event.
