Brush fires burn about 20 acres in lower Gloucester County

Two brush fires burned around 20 acres of grassland along Maryus and Ditch Bank roads in the Guinea area of Gloucester on Saturday. Abingdon Volunteer Fire and Rescue Chief David Townsend said the fires had obviously been intentionally set, around 6:30 in the morning. He said the fires were wind-driven and moved rapidly toward the water. Although they were threatening structures, he said, firefighters were able to control them and keep them from reaching any homes. Around a dozen AVFR firefighters responded to the scene with two brush trucks and three engines, said Townsend, and Gloucester Volunteer Fire and Rescue Squad sent an additional engine with several personnel. Townsend noted that at least the fire crews got to see a beautiful sunrise as they fought the fires....
