Boatbuilding workshop

Mathews Maritime Foundation held the first of several boatbuilding demonstrations and workshops on Saturday at the Gwynn’s Island Boat Shop. Foundation member Pete Hall, above, said that while no one showed up, he and Dave Rowland got some work done on the Mike O’Brien six-hour canoe they’ve been building. It’s made of exterior grade plywood with spruce chimes and sealed with epoxy on the inside. Hall encouraged the public to drop by any Saturday from now through November to learn what the Maritime Foundation does and to help out with boatbuilding and restoration efforts. There are currently two sailboats that need restoring—a Whitecap and a handmade sailboat.
