Boards discuss future of GCPS

From Virginia Standards of Learning cut scores to improving infrastructure, the Gloucester County Board of Supervisors and School Board discussed the future of Gloucester County Public Schools during a joint meeting held Tuesday night in the T.C. Walker Education Center auditorium.
For many years, a minimum score of 400 has been required of students to pass their SOL assessments. The state Board of Education has unanimously voted to raise the minimum passing rate, which will be different across grade levels and subjects, for these assessments.
“Now, there’s a higher threshold,” said superintendent of schools Dr. Anthony Vladu.
The plan to implement these changes has not yet been determined, but Vladu said that he and other Virginia superintendents are advocating for a “Year Zero,” meaning that no changes would begin until next school year.
“That would be my request,” said Vladu. “Give us time to adjust.”
