Board adopts policy on evaluation of instructional materials

The Gloucester School Board had a busy night at its regular monthly meeting Tuesday in the T.C. Walker Education Center, taking action on several topics ranging from instructional policies to financial matters.

Dr. Chuck Wagner, assistant superintendent of instruction, presented an instructional policy (Policy IIA) that covers regulations for materials with sexually explicit content and the selection, evaluation and adoption of library materials. All school divisions are required to adopt a policy that addresses sexually explicit instructional materials by January 2023.

“This is in response to some legislation at the state level,” explained Wagner. “But also the governor’s executive order that directed the department of education to make sure that school divisions had policies in place that could address the presence of sexually explicit instructional materials.”
