The Mathews High School boys’ and girls’ cross country teams held their first meet of the season last Wednesday, Aug. 27, at Beaverdam Park with the boys scoring 21 points placing first and the girls scoring 35 points placing second.
Blake Hunley placed first overall with a time of 17:30, shortly after John Jenkins with a time of 18:09, followed by Chance Higginbotham at 18:18. Coming in next for the Mathews Blue Devils were Salvador Cardenas with a time of 18:37, Adam Greve (19:28), Dominic Winter (19:49), Chloe Christensen (20:35), James Morgan (21:51), Marvin Ouma (JV) (24:15) and Lincoln Williams (24:37).
For the girls, coming in first place was Elizabeth Moore with a time of 23:11; in second for the Lady Devils was Paige Morris (JV) with a time of 24:13. Coming in shortly after was Morgan Stearns with a time of 24:34, followed by Alleen Rowe (25:38), Jordan Sadeg (26:33), Lyla Duff (28:15), Rayann Helbig (30:41) and Gracie Hellerbrandt (JV) (41:46).
