Mathews High School’s Franklin Cardenas (#1) attempts to elude several Cumberland tacklers in last Thursday’s season opener. The MHS football team fell to the visiting Dukes, 46-0. Cumberland jumped out to a 24-point lead in the first quarter “which hurt our team’s confidence,” said MHS head coach Dustin Mullins. “We rallied back” and held the Dukes to eight second-quarter points, Mullins added. In the second half, Mathews “came out with a better mindset” with some offensive production, although no points on the board. Mathews did have a chance to score, but fumbled the ball on the Dukes’ goal line. “It was a game of mental mistakes,” Mullins said. On Friday, the Devils will travel to Colonial Beach to face the Drifters. The next home game for the Blue Devils will be held on Friday, Sept. 12, against Sussex Central.
