Beverage announces retirement

Gloucester High School principal Layton “Tony” Beverage retired abruptly last week, Gloucester Public School Assistant Superintendent John Hutchinson confirmed yesterday. Hutchinson said GHS assistant principal Butch Gross is now the acting principal at the school.

Beverage had previously announced he was stepping down as the GHS principal, effective July 1. Soon after, the Gloucester County School Board appointed him to the position of director of student personnel services, effective July 1, to replace Rita Cargill-Brown, who had retired from the post. 

In an e-mail to staff dated May 1, Beverage announced his immediate retirement due to personal and health-related reasons. He also said he needed to “step away” from the job as student services director. ...
