Ceremonies will be held this morning, Thursday, July 9, in Mathews to commemorate the 250th anniversary of the Battle of Cricket Hill, a battle that marked the end of British royal authority in Virginia. The program begins at 10 a.m. at the actual site of the battle, on the grounds of Morningstar Marinas, 249 Mill Point Road, Hudgins. The public is invited to attend. Cricket Hill was a pivotal battle in the Revolutionary War, said Mathews VA250 Committee member Michael Rhodes, who was charged with organizing the event. It was the first battle after the signing of the Declaration of Independence, and the action drove Lord Dunmore, the last royal governor, out of Virginia for good.
