Battle of Cricket Hill diorama on display at Mathews Museum

A 6x6-foot diorama of the Battle of Cricket Hill is now on display at the Mathews Museum, 200 Main Street, Mathews. The diorama, created by model enthusiast, museum volunteer and Mathews resident Don Good, offers a close-up look at the battle, which took place in July 1776 and drove royal governor Lord Dunmore from his occupation of Gwynn’s Island and from Virginia forever. The exhibit depicts Gwynn’s Island, the mainland, Fort Hammond, and nearly 100 small boats from Lord Dunmore’s fleet gathered in Hills Bay. More than 100 miniature boats and hundreds of miniature troops bring the scene to life. Visitors will learn about life on the island, and the roles of Lord Dunmore’s Royal Ethiopian Regiment and the Loyal Virginia Regiment, a release said.
