Aug. 4 party primary set for November general elections

Party nominations for all offices appearing on the November 2026 General Election ballot, which will include in Virginia a Senate race and Congressional elections, will be decided in an Aug. 4 primary. The Virginia Department of Elections announced last week that the primary date has been changed for this year only from the previously marked calendar of a June 16 primary. The change is a result of House Bill 29, the department said. VDE also said the primary date change “is not contingent on the passage of the scheduled April 21, 2026 referendum” in which Virginia voters will decide on Congressional redistricting via a Constitutional amendment. This referendum is being contested in state court. Early in-person voting begins June 19. The deadline to register to vote and cast a regular ballot is July 24.
