Apprentice tattoo artist joins Abstract Art

Zoila Masiak, an apprentice at Abstract Art Tattoo in 17 Plaza, Ordinary, is helping to break the stereotype of a male-dominated business.

Masiak first became interested in tattoos at 16, an age too young to legally get a tattoo in Virginia. She said she was drawn to the business because of the artwork that’s involved.

Unlike years ago when many customers wanted “flash,” or copies of a design, many customers now want custom designed artwork to show off—or stay hidden—on their bodies. And Masiak is happy to provide her newly acquired skills to repeat customers as well as walk-ins.

Many people come into Abstract Art Tattoo seeking to mark a special occasion by marking their bodies. She said they may want to recognize a happy occasion such as a marriage or be tatted in memory of a loved one.

Each customer responds differently to a tattoo, Masiak said. Some experience only moderate pain, while others might dose off or even faint.
