Gloucester County officials said they will refund more than $1,800 in taxes paid recently by American Legion Post 75 as the local organization continues its efforts to regain its tax-exempt status with the Internal Revenue Service.

Commissioner of the Revenue Kevin Wilson said Tuesday that he discussed the matter with county attorney Ted Wilmot and then instructed treasurer Tara Thomas to refund the Legion’s recent tax payment. Wilson said he could not discuss the matter further, noting he generally does not comment on any individual property owner’s dealings with the county.

Wilmot said Tuesday that since the American Legion is recognized as tax-exempt by the Commonwealth of Virginia, then the individual posts in that organization are also considered tax-exempt for state and local purposes, as well. However, Wilmot said the Legion’s status with the IRS is a totally different issue.
