All-State selections

The honors keep rolling in for the Mathews High School girls’ soccer team, which advanced to the state playoffs for the first time this past spring in the squad’s brief two-year existence. Last Wednesday, the Virginia High School League announced its Class 1 all-state selections, with five MHS players winning the honor. Most notably, sophomore Lauren Johnson (above), a forward, was named first-team All-State. Additionally, four Lady Devils, all seniors who have graduated, made second-team All-State: top center and left, forward Hailey Denkinger, midfielders Kat Murphy, (bottom center and left) Lorena Carballo and defensive specialist Baylee Bell. The all-state soccer team consists of five forwards, five midfielders, five defenders, and one goalkeeper. Only those players selected first-team all-region are eligible for selection to the all-state team.
