A few openings remain for Kids Kayak Camp

There are still a few opening left for the Kids Kayak and Conservation Camp, which is sponsored by the Mathews Maritime Foundation and Mobjack Kayaking. The event will be held Aug. 4-8 at the West Mathews Civic League Center in Bohannon.

The camp, with weeklong, full-day sessions with kayak instruction mixed with conservation activities, is open to all middle school students in current grades 5-8 with a minimum age of 10 as of April 1, 2014.  Campers must be able to swim and each child is expected to participate in all activities of the camp, a release said.

Coordinator Janet Burgess said campers will learn basic kayak strokes and edging, wet exits and rescues all while having races, playing water polo, tag and other games. “Depending on the skill level achieved, there will be a paddle trip and a parents’ day demonstration,” she said. “More experienced kayakers will also learn additional skills.” During the conservation portion of the camp, Burgess ...
