Editor, Gazette-Journal:
On July 26, I went to the Mathews County Board of Supervisors’ meeting in the high school auditorium. I was both amazed and irritated by the security measures being taken at the door. It felt like entering a prison.
An elderly lady just before me was refused entrance into the auditorium because of her purse. People of Mathews County are not prone to violence, and I for one am tired of “security”; “it’s for your safety,” etc. We are slowly turning into a police state.
I have a saying for the board of supervisors: Heroes die only once; cowards die a thousand deaths. Alexander the Great said that, and it as true today as it was 2,400 years ago. Fear should not be the reaction of a free people.
Also, the question of the Confederate soldiers and sailors memorial still seems to be unsettled. All I have to say is … remember what happened in Richmond. Do we trust our board of supervisors to always remain on keeping the memorial? Times change; Northerners are moving in ...
