MHS crew hits the water

The Mathews High School crew program began its spring season last week. The group came down the Saturday before the season’s start and spent three hours prepping and organizing equipment. The first day last week was touch and go with thick fog. They completed the week with a successful swim test thanks to the Riverside Wellness and Fitness Center’s generosity in opening its pool for them. Coach Tim Ulsaker described his 2020 group as highly motivated, very competent and ready to compete. The four in the foreground are, from left, coxswain Jaxon McDonald, Josh Anthony, Ben Stroud, Matt Taylor and Cole Wheeler. In the background is, unusual for high school rowing, a girls’ Octuple (16 oars), from left, Lily Baucom, Jaysen Hall, Savannah Hartlove, Zoe Sawyer, Sandra Baer, Scarlet Johnson, Lillian Copeland, Mandy Moran and cox Matt Morgan.
