NANCY CAROL BODURTHA HIGGINBOTHAM

It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Nancy Carol Bodurtha Higginbotham on Monday, August 31, 2026, at age 83. She was born on December 6, 1942, and was a longtime resident of Mathews County, Virginia. She graduated from Mathews High School in 1961 and worked for the Nolan Company for over 10 years. She then worked for the Mathews County Commissioner of the Revenue office for over 30 years before retiring.

During retirement, she enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, especially at their sporting events, while cheering them on. She returned to work at the Mathews County Treasurer’s Office until her illness in 2025. She was a longtime member of the Oriental Chapter 30 O.E.S. and Mathews Baptist Church. She co-owned B & H fishing and hunting store until 1999, which was located in Hudgins, Virginia. She was a loving Mother, Grandmother, Sister, Aunt, and Friend to all who knew her.

She was preceded in death by her parents, William Irving and Miriam Fernald Bodurtha; her husband, Cabell Drew Higginbotham; her son, Steven Drew Higginbotham, and her sister-in-law, Rebecca Nelson Bodurtha.

Nancy leaves to cherish her memory her daughter, Kelly Higginbotham Dutton (Eddie); daughter-in-law, Tracy Sullivan; five grandchildren, Brandy Hurst (Eric), Brooke Higginbotham (Carlos), Haden Higginbotham, Haley Sullivan, and Jon Jenkins; six great-grandsons, Chance Higginbotham, Jayden Webb, Maverick, Lincoln, Leighton, and Parker Hurst; her brother, William “Billy” I. Bodurtha; sister, Cathy Bodurtha Rowe (David); brother-in-law, Upton “Punky” Higginbotham (Judy), and a host of nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews and dear friends.

The family will receive friends at Faulkner Funeral Homes, Foster-Faulkner Chapel, Mathews, on Thursday, September 3, 2026, from 5-7 p.m., with an Order of the Eastern Star service to be held at 6 p.m. Funeral services will be held at Mathews Baptist Church on Friday, September 4, 2026, at 11 a.m., with burial to follow at H.C. Smither Memorial Cemetery, Hudgins. A reception will follow the burial at Mathews Baptist Church.
