For nearly eight decades, Bear Graves of Gloucester, has refused to settle on a single career path. He has jumped from one passion to the next, working as a fine artist, model ship builder, musician, commercial designer, radio host, backwoods homesteader and pressroom operator. “I’ve always thought to myself, I’m not going to die and say, ‘I wish I’d done that,’” Graves said. “I do all my wishes.” His urge to create emerged long before he ever made a dime from a paint brush. As a young boy, he would cover every inch of his school notebooks with sketches, much to his mother’s dismay. “She’d buy brand-new notebook paper for school,” Graves said with a laugh. “While she was at work, I’d draw on every sheet.” Following an enlistment in the U.S. Navy during the Vietnam era, he put down roots in Lancaster, Pennsylvania.
