Fannie Ware has seen a lot of changes over the last 94 years

Fannie Diggs Ware of the Hicks Wharf area of Mathews County grew up in the strictly segregated society of the 1930s and 1940s. Now 94, she has witnessed vast changes in society while conducting her life along the lines laid down by her family, getting on with the day-to-day duties and keeping the radio dial tuned to a religious channel. And one can say that she has bloomed where she was planted. Through it all, the constants have been home, hard work, her beloved family and church…and her gardens. Born on Jan. 23, 1932 to Wormley and Ophelia Diggs, Fannie was one of eight children. A ninth, the oldest, was lost when “my mother had a miscarriage on a wagon. It went over a bump,” Ware said. Young Fannie Marie Diggs was third in a string of eight children: Robert, Rosie, Fannie, Scott, Hollis, Andrew, Melvin and Catherine.
