As the Gloucester Arts Festival continues to celebrate all aspects of the arts during June, and as volunteers prepare for huge East Riverfest and Gwynn’s Island Festival celebrations in Mathews the last two weekends of this month, events for the local celebrations of America’s 250th anniversary are getting underway. Readings of the Declaration of Independence, religious observances, and fireworks are all part of the plans.Upcoming activities organized by the Gloucester VA250 Committee and the Mathews VA250 Committee, and by other groups, include the following. Gloucester Age of Style, Age of Change: Sidney Ripley of the Gloucester Museum of History will present a lecture at 6 p.m. next Thursday, June 25, at Gloucester Library, Main Street Center, who will talk about fashion and style of the 18th century. She will discuss how revolution and social change was reflected in the way people chose to present themselves. Those taking part will be able to make an 18th century fan to take home. ...
