The Mathews Museum is launching an Amateur Radio Club led by Allan May of Mathews, a third-generation radio enthusiast. Museum president Tom Robinson, also a longtime ham radio operator, said the club will offer certification classes to anyone interested in obtaining an amateur radio license. Plans include setting up a radio station at the museum and creating a student-operated community broadcast station, a release said. Students from local public and private schools and homeschoolers are invited to take part. Earlier this year, students helped set up the museum’s communications system and Robinson said they were excited being able to speak directly with astronauts aboard the International Space Station. “One of our goals is to work with the local CERT [Community Emergency Response Team] organization to help certify members and strengthen emergency communications capabilities in our community,” Robinson said.
