Chuck Thompson, 90, of Gloucester, passed away peacefully on Monday, Jan. 7, 2019, in the care of his family and Walter Reed Convalescent Center.
He was born May 25, 1928 in Hardin, Montana, and his family later moved to Idaho.
He is survived by his devoted wife of 68 years, Agnes Thompson.
Chuck served our country, an Army veteran of World War II and Korea, and then assisted in Vietnam as a government civilian. Chuck retired from the U.S. Army Reserve in 1969. He received the World War II Victory Medal, Army of Occupation Medal, the Korean Service Medal with a Bronze Star, and the United Nations Service Medal in recognition of his service. As a government civilian, Chuck retired in 1984 from Rock Island Arsenal, Illinois.
Parents Hattie (Smith) and Halsey Thompson preceded him in death, as well as his three younger brothers, Vernon, Lewis, Jerry (his wife Linda still living); his only son, Charles Thompson Jr., who passed away in 1999, and a grandson, Sky Thompson, who passed away at 17 months old.
He is survived by his wife, Agnes, and his granddaughter, Jeannette James of Virginia Beach, her husband Paul and great-grandchildren, Steven (serving in U.S. Marine Corps) and Josh (recently graduated from Old Dominion University).
Upon moving to Gloucester in 1991, Chuck became active in his church and the Gloucester community by joining the Knights of Columbus Council 9428, the American Legion Unit 75, the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 8252, and the Moose Lodge 886. As a volunteer, Chuck drove the Veterans Affairs van from the Hampton Medical Center to McGuire VA in Richmond.
A celebration of Chuck’s life was held Wednesday, Jan. 16, 2019, at the Church of St. Therese. Father Jim Cowles officiated. The family received friends prior to the service from 10-11 a.m. when the Funeral Mass began. Following the Mass, his inurnment was in Windsor Gardens Mausoleum with military honors, and then a reception for family and friends at the church followed the ceremony.
