The Mathews Rotary Club held its annual Charter Night dinner on Feb. 25 at the Mathews Yacht Club, honoring the founding of Rotary International on Feb. 23, 1903. The current iteration of Mathews Rotary was chartered on June 29, 1987 and is still going strong. This year’s speaker was the Honorable Bill Bolling, who served Mathews County, among other localities, in the Virginia State Senate for three terms from 1996-2005. He also served two terms as Virginia lieutenant governor from 2006-2013. He currently teaches political science courses at Virginia Commonwealth University and George Mason University. He formerly taught at the University of Richmond and James Madison University. Bolling discussed “Pernicious Political Polarization and Its Impact On American Democracy,” describing how polarized politics has become over recent years and the need to once again find common ground for the good of all and the future of democracy.
