94 THMS sixth graders take part in Bay Day program

 

Ninety-four sixth grade students at Thomas Hunter Middle School experienced the culture, history, and science of living and working on the Chesapeake Bay and surrounding area on Friday during the annual Chesapeake Bay Day.

The students rotated through eight stations working with 20 professional resource people knowledgeable in their field of expertise of the bay’s environment, occupations, and heritage. They learned the history of New Point Comfort Lighthouse with help from student teachers. Tidewater Oyster Gardener Association members Mike Sanders, Bob Morgan and Brian Wood demonstrated how oysters filter the water and explained maintaining an Oyster Garden. The students climbed the station for Oyster Tonging and tried their hand at using original oyster tongs to catch oyster shells and transfer them into a basket.
