94 anglers compete in Mathews Rotary Tournament

Ninety-four anglers competed this past weekend in the 11th annual Mathews Rotary Club Rockfish Tournament, an event hosted by Morningstar Marina, Gwynn’s Island.

Although the weather conditions were not ideal, eight fish were delivered to the weigh station on Saturday. Sunday was much more agreeable but only six fish were presented to the weigh master.  Although Sunday’s count was less than Saturday’s, the size difference was significant.

Saturday’s eight fish totaled 75.05 pounds while Sunday’s catch tipped the scale at 166.35 lbs. This year’s grand prize winner of $2,000 was Enan Buck in his boat Scumline. Buck’s rockfish weighed 50.6 pounds and was 50 inches long. The second- and third-place fish were also citation-sized catches.  Andrew Cox landed a 41.95-pound fish in Churning and Burning to collect the $1,000 second-place prize.
