56 entries in Mathews Christmas Parade

The Mathews Christmas Parade on Saturday was a happy affair, from crowds lining the streets to the costumed characters on the floats to the animals joining the walking units. There were smiles all around as the parade marched down Mathews Main Street, dispensing candy to bystanders along the way. “Plus the flyover is always fun,” said parade organizer Kat Larkin of the Mathews County Visitor and Information Center. The temperature was a bearable 48 degrees and there was little wind, so grand marshals Bette Dillehay and Tom Edwards were able to ride with the top down on the cherry red convertible they were in, while Princess Anna on the Court House Players’ “Frozen Jr.” float didn’t have to suffer much as she rode bare-armed for nearly an hour. Larkin said there were 56 entries in this year’s parade, including the fire trucks, ambulances, and sheriff’s office vehicles, and that the floats didn’t disappoint. “People get more and more creative each year,” she said.
