2 dogs die in Gloucester Point house fire

Two dogs died in a house fire on Hayes Road in Gloucester Point Saturday afternoon. Abingdon Volunteer Fire and Rescue Squad Captain Drew Luellen said he believed that the owner of the house had run out to go to the store. The call was dispatched at 2:57 p.m., he said, and an ambulance was on the scene at 3:01 p.m., followed by an engine at 3:03 p.m. Firefighters found heavy smoke coming from the eaves of the roof and flames showing from a window on the side of the house facing Bethany United Methodist Church, he said. Two teams entered the house, said Luellen, one to attack the fire, which originated in the kitchen, and the other to find the dogs. High heat and zero visibility hampered the search efforts, he said. The dogs were found in crates in the bedroom farthest from the kitchen. The fire spread from the kitchen into the attic, which was filled with belongings that were destroyed, said Luellen.
