15,000+ attend weather-shortened Daffodil Festival

The 37th annual Gloucester Daffodil Festival was planned for Saturday, April 1 and Sunday, April 2. Mother Nature had other plans, with high winds resulting in the cancellation of Saturday’s part of the festival.

But the Daffodil Festival went on, minus the parade, on Sunday, and the turnout was great as Mother Nature finally cooperated with pleasant weather and sunny skies.

“It was an extremely tough decision to cancel Saturday’s portion of the Daffodil Festival,” said Katey Legg, director of Gloucester Parks, Recreation and Tourism. “The volunteers and staff work so hard for the entire event, so it’s disappointing that a portion of it was canceled.

“We just couldn’t take the chance with the forecasted high winds, and I think we made the right call,” Legg said on Monday. “While Sunday is usually half a day, we decided to extend the hours to give the vendors more exposure, and those who would’ve attended a better chance to experience everything.
