Youth social media forum to be held at library

A forum on social media and the risks it presents to youth will be held from 7-8 p.m. next Thursday, May 19, at Mathews Memorial Library, Main Street, Mathews.

It can be a challenge to keep up with the latest apps that teens are using to communicate, said a press release from library director Bette Dillehay. According to a Pew Research Center study, she said, 92 percent of teenagers report going online daily, including 24 percent who say they are online almost constantly. Their use, she said, is aided by “the convenience and constant access provided by mobile devices, especially smartphones.”

The program will feature talks by Greg Lewis, head of technical services at the library; Laurel Byrd, principal of Thomas Hunter Middle School; Dr. Toni Childress, principal of Mathews High School; and Deputy April Edwards of the Mathews County Sheriff’s Office.

For more information, call Rachel Wood, head of youth services at the library, at 804-725-5747.
