The Gloucester Resource Youth Team and the Gloucester Unit of the Boys & Girls Clubs of the Virginia Peninsula, Hayes Shopping Center, are holding a Youth & Family Resource Fair on Saturday, May 9, from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m.
“We’re cohosting it together here,” said B&G Unit Director James Luck. “It’s our first year doing it.”
The purpose of the fair is to create a low-barrier, one-stop shop for local families and youth to discover services, programs and opportunities from which they could potentially benefit.
The fair is also an opportunity for participating organizations to recruit new volunteers and members.
Representatives from local sports leagues, summer camps, county programs and more will be in attendance. Children will be able to participate in activities and games related to these different organizations.
“Just try to spark that interest,” said Luck about this interactive component of the fair.
Those who will be in attendance include Gloucester County Community Engagement & Public Information, Three Rivers Healthy Families, Kiwanis Club of Gloucester, Gloucester County Parks, Recreation & Tourism, Gloucester Youth Baseball, Fairfield Foundation, Gloucester Outlaws Football & Cheer, Virginia Cooperative Extension 4-H, Gloucester Youth Football and Cheer League Knights, Baystars youth soccer, and Machicomoco State Park.
Activities planned by these organizations include planting, batting practice, archaeology, football drills, soccer pick-up games and more.
The Gloucester B&G Club recently received significant renovations, including new carpeting, tiling and bathrooms. The other bathrooms in the facility are currently being renovated.
Luck said the resource fair will be “an opportunity for us to show off our facility.”
The club also took the opportunity to rearrange its furniture when putting the facility back together post-renovation.
“It’s made a world of difference,” said Luck. “Hopefully, the next phase will be outdoors.”
Any other youth-serving organizations who would like to participate in the Youth & Family Resource Fair on May 9 can contact Luck at jluck@bagclub.com or by calling the club at 804-684-9028.
