Young MHS golf team learning the ropes

This year’s Mathews High School golf team consists of nine golfers. The young squad has one senior (MichaelDion Davis-Ruskovtiz), one junior (Sam Carmine) and one sophomore (Noah Iveson).

The majority of the team are freshmen—Zach Dehoux, Matt Jenkins, Chase Lewis, Cole Huff and Hayden Downs—as well as one eighth grader, Caleb Thomas.

The team had a scrimmage against Gloucester on Sept. 7 when the team’s new coach James Hutcheson had an opportunity to see his squad compete for the first time.

On the day, Matt Jenkins had the low score, as well as a season best, shooting a 49 over nine holes of play. On Sept. 12, Mathews had a match against Middlesex and Lancaster. Middlesex won the match with a total score of 176, Lancaster had 189 points, and Mathews came in third with 226 points. The low score of the round was shot by Greg Pitts, who scored 40 for Middlesex.
