Young GHS team kicks off football season tonight

It will be a young bunch of Gloucester High School Dukes that takes to the gridiron tonight to face Phoebus. “We’re really young this year, with just 11 seniors. In our scrimmages, we did well against York, but against Grafton our youth really showed,” said Gloucester head coach Brandon Kelley.

Seniors on the roster include Cody McDermott, Watkins Yeager, Michael Midgette, Devon Pullen, Rashawn Harris, Logan Blazvick, Darryl Butler, Matt Smith, Alexander Mackey, Diego Inzunza and Jordan Haas.

Underclassmen on the varsity roster include freshman Isaiah Spencer, who is vying with junior Caleb Smith for the quarterback job, and freshmen Peyton Carneal and Cameron Walker. Sophomores making the squad are Robbie Torrey, Walker Atwood, Elijah Shaffer, John West, Shane Eller and Austin Leffel. 

Over half of the varsity players are juniors this season, and Kelley will be counting on them to help fill in the gaps left by inexperience. “The future is looking bright...
